“Are you Restless?”

November 1, 2021 By Amos McCarthy

Grace and peace from our Lord Jesus Christ. Heartfelt gratitude to you all for the chance to take a little time off. I did not take time off from my prayers for you all. In such an unsettled time, I pray for the peace of God in your lives.
I believe we all have experienced the difficulty of calming our soul and waiting before God. What I have come to understand is that our old nature is restless. It is also because we live in a world that is in so much hurry. We feel uptight or anxious. When we feel restless, we will always have the TV on. We constantly stroll through our phones moving from apps to apps. We start a project we can not complete.
This restlessness is identified by different names. Some consider it our search for meaning. Or, is it our desire for significance? Is it the fuel that drives us for money or power? I see it as our soul longing for God. Saint Augustine said something interesting: “Lord, you have made us for yourself. Our heart is restless until it rests in you.” If we translate what Saint Augustine is saying, we will agree that our completion as humans is not found in romance, wealth, nor learning. It is found in the one who made us.
Do you identify with a feeling of restlessness? If you do, it is time to know God intimately and trust him completely. These few days, I have not missed a moment to respond to the haunts and hounds of God’s Spirit. Are you restless? Begin your week by renewing your love for God. His Spirit will convert your restlessness into peace.
God bless you all. Please stay safe.

Memory verse: Psalm 46:10.

“We need to find God. He can not be found in noise and restlessness” (Mother Teresa).

“Are you dealing with Regrets?”

October 28, 2021 By Amos McCarthy

Good morning. It is my prayers that God will continue to guide and protect you. It is an excellent thing to always give praise to God the moment we awake from our sleep. It is by his grace we are up. We may not be happy with everything we do in our lives, let us be assured that God cares. He can mend the broken pieces.

While a refugee, the opportunity to go to Nigeria to study medicine came. It was a free scholarship.  Unfortunately, it only covers the prospective student. I had to choose between helping to raise my daughters or go to school. I choose to stay. I missed the opportunity to be a medical doctor, something I greatly desired at the time. I sometimes look back with a feeling of regret. But I got great consolation from God’s Word at the time: “We know all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28 NRSV).

Are you dealing with regrets? If all of us would be honest, we can admit we have done something in life that we regret. I know you know the familiar, if only. Have you said that too? If only I had more money; If only I had not said it…. I know people who admit that they have made a mess of their lives.

But there is hope. It is from a loving God who can help us deal with regrets. He is the Pottor that can remake us. God just picks up the pieces and remakes us. God never throws us away when we make a mess of our lives. Remember God is close to the broken-hearted.

Memory verse: romans 8:28

God’s mercy and grace gives me hope for myself, and our world” (Billy Graham)

“Why Am I Here?”

October 27, 2021 By Amos McCarthy

Why am I here? Everyone wonders this at some point. Some theories suggest that we’re merely taking up space and will return to nothingness when we die. There are also people who say we are masters of our own destiny. Both are untrue! The Lord has placed you on earth to fulfill His purpose.

God has a unique plan for every person’s life, but Christians all share one goal: to be conformed to His image. This process begins here on earth and is finished when we reach heaven. Much of the work the Lord does in our earthly life centers on our character. He shows us how to be as loving, kind, and peaceful as Jesus.

We might think this is hard. But the truth is, the Holy Spirit indwells the believer and then lives the life of Christ through him or her. We should be submissive to His guidance. That means we should respond to situations in life with this question: “How can You use this to make me more like Jesus?”

The Lord is behind everything that happens to you. Either He directly instigates the situation, or He allows it to take place. Both trials and triumphs are engineered to fulfill God’s great purpose: crafting a life that reflects His love and glory to the world.

Memory verse: Genesis 3:18

“The mystery of human existence lies not only staying alive, but in something to live for.” Fyodor Dostoyevsky

“God is Merciful”

October 22, 2021 By Amos McCarthy

The weekend is here. It is my prayers that your weekend will be peaceful.
A story of how God is gracious and merciful is found in101 Hymn Stories. At the age of 23, Robert Robonsin wrote the hymn “Come thy fount of every blessing, streams of mercy, never ceasing.” Sadly, he returned to his old ways. Traveling one day on a stagecoach, Robinson sat by a young woman who happens to be reading a book containing Robinson’s hymn. She came across a verse she thought was interesting: “Prone to wander Lord, I feel it Prone to leave the God I love.” With tears streaming down his face, Robinson confessed that he was the poor unhappy guy who wrote those words. He made it clear that he would give up anything to return to how happy he was when he wrote those words. The young lady informed him God’s mercy is still available. Robinson was moved, and he returned to the Lord.

Psalms 145:8 says, The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.” We all have received mercy when we needed it most. You must have been forgiven for hurting somebody’s feelings, or breaking a friend’s trust. Or there was a time when someone came alongside during a difficult season, offering support, or a prayer. When we choose to be merciful, compassionate, or forgiving, it shows God’s character in us. It impacts our lives. God does not choose these acts, it is part of who he is.

Let us not forget how merciful God is. His mercies endures forever. Do you remember a time when you were merciful to others? What made you choose mercy? Or are you holding an age old grudge? It is time to let go!
God’s blessings. Love you all. Please stay safe>

Memory verse: Psalm 145:8

“Nothing emboldens sin so much as mercy” (William Shakespeare).
